The sailing season starts at the beginning of April and runs until the end of November. From May to September, Young Peoples’ sailing takes place on most Saturday afternoons, with activities ranging from basic tuition to ‘fun’ racing organised by one or more of the club’s training officers. Parents and other club members attend and help to ensure these days are both fun and instructive. The club’s safety boat is on the water at all times.
Windsurfers may take to the water all year round providing they adhere to the terms of ‘buddy sailing’ (see below) or there is a manned club safety boat on the water. The club asks that safety is kept in mind and common sense should be employed when dinghies are racing. Because of the club’s size and location, it attracts a regular core of short board sailors. Course racing is sometimes organised and there are occasional demonstration days and other meetings.
Dinghy racing with safety boat cover is run throughout the season on Sunday afternoons and on Wednesday evenings from April to September with members racing in Sprint 15 catamarans and in Laser, Contender, Supernova, Streaker and various other dinghies. Dinghies/catamarans over 16ft in length and mechanically powered craft are not permitted. Other special events are organised through the season. Outside of the above times when there is safety boat cover, dinghy sailing may not take place. Exception to this is during the months June, July and August when ‘buddy sailing’ can take part (see below). View the 2017 Sailing Programme here.
Buddy sailing takes place when
- another fully crewed craft/windsurfer is on the water and available to give assistance as necessary.
- all helms of participating crafts/windsurfers are over the age of 18 years.
Training courses take place throughout the year for both dinghy sailing and windsurfing. Details can be found on the Training page.
